There are only 71 public libraries for 160 million people in Bangladesh.
The sullen truth has to be recognized as the country is for the first time going to observe the National Library Day, a press conference was told on Sunday.
The Department of Public Libraries (DoPL) arranged the press conference in the conference room of Sufia Kamal National Public Library in Dhaka to disclose programs they have chalked out for the day.
Speaking at the press conference, DoPL Director General Ashish Kumar Sarker said: “We are working on development of public libraries across the country. We could increase the number of libraries soon.”
“National Library Day will encourage readers to be enthusiastic and arouse their interest in reading more books,” he added.
The DG also mentioned that Bishwa Sahitya Kendra had handed over the operations of their mobile libraries to the National Library.
“We will work on developing those mobile libraries as well,” he said.
The DoPL will bring out a colourful a procession from Shahbagh intersection on Monday in the morning , marking the day. The procession will parade parade important points on the Dhaka University campus and end at Central Shaheed Minar.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will join the procession. A discussion will also be held with Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith in the chair.
